Turkey Meatballs with Giada

I was thinking about comfort foods the other day, and one that immediately came to mind was meatballs and spaghetti. I was surprised that I hadn't made such an easy and affordable recipe yet. Instead of making the beef-based version, I thought I'd try this ground turkey version from Giada di Laurentiis' Everyday Italian cookbook. Although it's not as satisfying as my mom's homemade version, it's little bit easier on the conscience. The parsley and Romano cheese did gave off an amazing smell. Isn't half of the taste in the smell anyways?

We were hit with our biggest, iciest storm yet this winter here in Pittsburgh this weekend. It meant no skating lessons Saturday morning, so I decided to use my new membership to the Carnegie Museum of Art to see the Teenie Harris exhibit. It was nice to just sit and absorb the photo slide show in the exhibit hall. We also went to see one of my favorite movies of the year and my front runner for best picture, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. It was a touching and beautiful story of a son trying to keep the spirit of his father alive amongst the tragedy of 9-11. It had a positive message in the end. What did you do to beat the cold and dreary weather this weekend?

Mandarin Chicken Salad

Most colleges have a cafe that also doubles as a study place and a hang out. A meeting place, if you will. At my college it was called the In Between. Although it was mere feet away from the actual cafeteria, the food was significantly better. One of my favorite things to order was the Mandarin Chicken Salad. I had a craving for it today, and since I had book club tonight and needed something fast, it was the perfect storm. This really was a cinch to make. I had some leftover balsamic marinated chicken from the night before, which I just cut into slices. You should probably use Asian-style noodles for this, but I just boiled some spaghetti noodles and rinsed them in cold water. Then I tossed the noodles, lettuce, chicken, mandarin oranges, and dressing. I used my Trader Joe's Gyoza dipping sauce for dressing, and I have to say I came pretty close to replicating the original. It made me slightly nostalgic for the days of getting a Mandarin Chicken Salad in a plastic take out box because I didn't have time to go to the cafeteria the night before a big test or paper was due. Not that nostalgic. Just slightly.

PB&J, a wink and a smile, Kim Kardashian and divorce...tapered pants and wedge boots? Not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of great matches. However, the wedge of these brown suede booties is just what this tapered 80s throwback needs to be brought up to speed. I like that the boots match the tomboyish look of this outfit, but still bring the sexy with a little heel. I have said it before; I love a good menswear-inspired look. The key to achieving this is to look like you raided Julia Roberts' closet at any point during the 80s. Speaking of movie/movie stars, I just saw the Artist and highly recommend you go see it. You won't even miss talkies!

TJ Maxx Roundup: Home Organization

I had some Christmas money from my Grandparents burning a hole in my pocket and decided to see if I could spend it in the home section of TJ Maxx. It seems that I can. Having lived in my apartment for close to 6 months now I needed some stylish forms of organization. The shelves in my closet were in desperate need of some way to keep my jewelry neatly placed and not just scattered so I picked up this black and white paisley jewelry holder. I am thinking about going back to get more. I think stacking a couple of these in different colors and patterns would be cute in a shelf.

The paisley theme continues with this great journal that I found for $5! It makes things like writing out wish lists, thoughts and resolutions a little more official.

Sorting through my mail when I get home is one of the last things I want to do. It's so bad that I sometimes hide my mail in the closet until a future date when I want to sort it, which is never. Maybe this stylish fleur-de-lis mail sorter will motivate me.

I had been seeing the crew neck knit sweater paired with a lady like skirt everywhere, and I quickly wanted to add the look to my repertoire. You have probably seen a million pics reposted of Teen Vogue editor, Mary Kate Steinmiller, wearing the look. It wasn't until I received this sweater for Christmas that I was able to recreate my own version.

Hawaiian Crock Pot Chicken

As far as New Year's resolutions are concerned it's the second week of 2012 and I have stuck to making one new recipe a week. Two recipes! Impressive right? This week I wanted to test drive the new crock pot, a Christmas gift from Mom and Dad. Thanks again guys! I decided to make this Hawaiian Crock Pot Chicken recipe I saw on pinterest. The blog post has since been taken down, but there are only three ingredients: 1 bottle of Archer's Farm Hawaiian Style BBQ sauce from Target, 4-6 chicken breasts and 1 can of diced pineapple. Put the chicken in the crock pot, top with the pineapples and then the barbecue sauce and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours. According to the original blog post you can put the chicken in frozen. I partially defrosted mine but next time I think I will put it in completely frozen because from the time I leave for work to the time I get back, it has been more than 8 hours. I could not find the Archer's Farm barbecue sauce at my Target so I substituted it with another brand. I would like to try that some time. The chicken comes out juicy and tangy and I love the sweet pineapples as a compliment.

This dress in particular has me hoping for February 5 to hurry up and get here. I have been sick for the entire first week of 2012. This morning I accidentally hit dismiss on my alarm and had to spring into action to get showered and drive to work. With day old hair, I knew a bun was my only option. After grabbing clothes off of hangers and throwing them on the floor, I think I came up with a pretty decent outfit. Maybe I should try to get dressed while half asleep more often, as opposed to carefully planning my outfits.

Green Beans with Lemon and Oil

I like to try to incorporate veggies into my nightly dinners. Since I have been pretty much rotating between two of my favorites, brussel sprouts and butternut squash, I thought I would try this Gourmet Green Beans with Lemon and Oil recipe for something new. It also fulfills one of my New Year's resolutions. I was never really a big fan of green beans. They are pretty bland unless a ton of salt is added to them, which is why I was intrigued by this recipe. It also looked really affordable and easy to make. Two more requirements for the new year. I'm a big fan of lemon so I loved the flavor of this dish. The texture and taste of a chilled green bean is interesting though. It reminds me more of a summer side. I can't say that I like it or dislike it. I am somewhere in between on that. Maybe it is an acquired taste. I would give this recipe a try again.

Manicure tip

My nails always feel so neat and tidy after someone else does them. One of the techniques of a true manicurist that I can never seem to master is great shaping. The other day when I was getting my nails done I noticed that the nail technician used a large black nail file on my hands. I had always thought that was just for shaping toe nails, but it does a much better job than those dinky little thin files for finger nails. Was I the only one who thought that? Do you use the large black nail file on your finger nails all the time?

Highlights of 2011 and Resolutions for 2012

As you can see I ended up wearing this classic buffalo plaid dress with a black blazer, black tights, heels, and a fabulous gold necklace from the boy. Once again, shopping my closet turned out to be successful and is already helping me with one of my New Year's resolutions to save more money. Every new year I always have a laundry list of things I want to accomplish. It oftentimes feels unrealistic to set such lofty expectations, but it's nice to keep this list in the back of my mind for times when inspiration runs out or I need help remembering what it is I want. If I can accomplish a couple of these things in 2012 I would be happy. Happy New Year! What are your resolutions for the new year?

Consigment Shopping Before New Year's Eve

I found myself this New Year's Eve with no clear choice in my closet as far as outfits are concerned. I have a couple lovely new pieces of jewelry, but that's just part of it. Not to mention bills, upcoming trips and birthdays have me trying to save my money. So I decided to check out Avalon to see what was available in the affordable and slightly used department. There were a lot of great pieces, but no winner for New Year's Eve. I will probably wear something I already own, but I wanted to show you some of the cool dresses and not so cool dresses I looked at for inspiration.

This metallic silver dress was great, but a couple sizes to big. I wanted to try it on just to make sure. If there was more time a trip to the tailor would have take care of that.

Too small.

I loved the idea of this dress, however the hearts are just not my style. I loved the sheer overlay and the intricate beading.

Great J.Crew jacket, but too big and boxy.

This dress fell under the category of "I don't know how I am supposed to wear it". The torso was way too long.

This turned out to be a little too long and unflattering in my opinion.

Although this is a great jacket that could easily be dressed up or down, I thought the pattern and boxy shape were a little overwhelming on me.

Finally I struck gold with this practically brand new, silk J.Crew blouse. It may not make an appearance for New Year's Eve, but it will be put to good use for the rest of 2012. What are you wearing for NYE?

Warm Christmas

Merry Christmas! How was your day? Did you eat a lot? Did you get everything you wanted?
We had unusually beautiful weather in Cleveland this year. Warm enough that I was able to go for a walk after lunch and take some quick outfit pics. Although there was no snow I felt like the sunshine added to the overall cheeriness of the day. I got some very fun gifts for my apartment including some new party games and a crock pot that I had been wanting. And I of course got clothes and more clothes. This flyaway cardigan was one of my favorites. I see it becoming a very consistent member of my wardrobe. One of the best moments of the day was surprising my mom with a photo blanket of our family. I ate a ton and laughed hysterically playing my new party game with everyone. What was your favorite moment from your Holiday celebration?

Are you done with your Christmas shopping? Yes. Have you wrapped all of your presents? No. Me Neither. I had a strange phenomenon happen to me this year. I did not have a surplus of boxes and ribbons and bags to wrap my presents with. Last year, when I was living with my parents, there was this storage area full of Christmas wrapping paper and boxes. It was great. This year that storage area did not appear in my new apartment and I was bewildered. Where do boxes come from I wondered? Does the stork bring them too? Perplexing stuff.

So I thought I'd share one last gift tip just in case you really are one of those last-minute shoppers. I was in Shadyside last weekend browsing the United Colors of Benetton where I found these shiny new headphones and this great new pair of leggings all for under $25. Either of these would make a great stocking stuffer for that stylish lady in your life. The scarf was something I picked up while Christmas shopping as well and I barely take it off. Happy Shopping to all of those slackers out there!

Sorry for the lack of outfit posting. I have been completely overwhelmed by the holidays this year. I committed to a cookie exchange that was not for the meek of heart. 10 dozen cookies! All in one night. And I chose the hardest recipe there is: sugar cookies with royal icing. From scratch. I can't look at a cookie sheet without feeling nauseous. Now that I have survived the tough stuff, I am ready for the tundra that is Western PA. Yes, these Crocs Fuzz Booties are as warm as they look and comfy too! However, they do require a look with some panache. So I paired them with this 70s style poncho and leggings. I didn't want to overwhelm their already attention-getting presence. Is anyone else thinking of the ski lodge scenes from Dumb and Dumber? Queue movie quote:

Did anyone else read this article in the New York Times? Being someone who just started renting for the first time I am interested in the renting versus buying argument. It would be nice to have a place that is all mine. To know that you wouldn't have to pack up and move every couple of years is a comforting thought. However, I like the flexibility renting provides. You never know where you will end up. It's very nomadic, which I kind of like. What are your thoughts on this? Do you rent or own? How cute is the studio she ended up with? When I first saw this antler pillow on Habitually Chic, I was so in love with the ski lodge quality of it. Heather Clawson is right. It definitely gives a cozy cabin feeling. And it is so perfect for winter/holiday decor. Then I got this bird pillow as a house warming gift, and I am once again in love with the outdoorsy vibe. I may be outgrowing my love of animal shaped pillows and ditching them for this more adult and classy version. Wouldn't it make a nice Christmas gift for someone who just moved?

Black Friday recap and tips

My mom and I both love shopping. I think I can partially attribute my interest in trends and style to my mom. So even though we don’t normally go out on Black Friday to shop, we decided to go this year just for the fun of it. It surprisingly wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be. We certainly didn’t encounter anything like the crazy stories we heard on the news. Of course the normal rules of shopping don’t apply on a day like that, so I came up with a few of my own observations. I would love to hear your Black Friday tips too!

If you get there after the 5 a.m. crowd and before the lunch crowd the mall is not as hectic.
The only exception to rule 1 is Forever 21. Only enter this store with ear plugs lest the fashion-obsessed teenagers rupture your ear drums as they yell with glee.
Don’t waste time at stores that promise amazing deals, but upon further inspection you realize the only clothes on sale look like they are from a different decade or were a mistake they are desperately trying to get rid of.
Some stores have a time limit on deals. What’s up with that?
Keep up your stamina with plenty of food breaks. The guy handing out samples in the food court is more than happy to help you.
Sometimes waiting in line for a dressing room is not worth it.
Trying something on over your clothes requires skill and a friend to watch your purse.
Keep ALL of your receipts. Don’t forget gift receipts.
Ask for gift boxes now. The closer it gets to Christmas the more likely stores are to run out.
Don’t forget to take advantage of support Small Businesses Saturday.

The stores that had the best deals for us all day were Gap with up to 60% off and at least 20% off, and the Limited with 50% off of everything. Where did you find the best deals?

For some reason I thought creating a board would be much more involved, but luckily some trend setters already uploaded a ton of great inspirational photos to choose from. Crocs and Pavement Day 5

Today is the last day of looks from my photoshoot with Crocs and Pavement. Check back through my other posts to see the rest of the photos.

I thought I’d end the week with my favorite outfits, these dresses and boots. Like I said in my last post, these sleek Crocs ankle booties look marvelous with a dressier outfit. This black smock dress has a wonderfully playful look about it with its gathering at the top and bell sleeves. The pattern has such a nice vintage flair to it. Even though this dress is more modest the boots kick it up a notch.

I love the silhouette these black boots create with black leggings. They look so chic with this gorgeous purple dress. The ruffle spilling over the belt is extremely flattering. The whole ensemble is girly with an edge.

Crocs and Pavement Day 4

For the rest of the week I will be posting looks from my photoshoot with Crocs and Pavement with Pittsburgh as our backdrop. Check back throughout the week for more updates.

In areas like Pittsburgh and Cleveland, a winter coat is a wardrobe staple from end of October to Early April. Considering how often we don our coats, I believe they are just as important as any other piece of clothing when it comes to establishing individual style. That is perhaps why Pavement has such a great selection. The plaid pattern of this coat has a vintage feel to it. It reminds me of a Christmas Story because it looks like the kind of warm and practical coat that would be worn in the 1940s but with great stylistic details. I love the double brass buttons and the large collar that you can pull up over your ears when the winter winds start to pick up.

If you have a good utilitarian coat you also need a dress coat. Like I said, we take our coats seriously. The ruffle on Sarrah’s coat is adorable. A white coat is so bright and crisp even on the dreariest of winter days. The best part is that this coat can be worn for special occasions or just running around town. This pair of Crocs ankle booties also can be worn with jeans or for work especially if your job requires business casual dress but you still do a lot of walking. These booties will keep your feet warm, dry and most importantly they are comfortable.

Crocs and Pavement Day 3

For the rest of the week I will be posting looks from my photoshoot with Crocs and Pavement with Pittsburgh as our backdrop. Check back throughout the week for more updates.

I never thought I would be very interested in a mini skirt until I saw these updated versions at Pavement. It was practically love at first site. I knew these cute boots with their fold over cuff would go well with this long sleeve cowl neck shirt and stripe skirt as soon as I saw them styled on Pavement's Facebook page, which has amazing outfit inspiration by the way. The shirt is a really soft cotton material and the cowl neck and cut are extremely flattering. The skirt is perfect if you are not the type of person who can just wear leggings and a top. It adds that extra pop of color. This is one of those outfits that looks and feels amazing.

Pavement shirt, skirt and necklace

I love the colors of this outfit. The tribal print skirt is a perfect compliment to these suede boots. Also the purples in the skirt and sweater really go well with the boot's chestnut color. The edges of the sweater are wide like a poncho but with sleeves. It lays so nicely over the fitted skirt and leggings. I feel like this outfit could be worn out to the bar or dinner and still provide that cute look, while staying warm. I wish I knew layering could be fashionable in college.

Crocs and Pavement Day 2

For the rest of the week I will be posting looks from my photoshoot with Crocs and Pavement with Pittsburgh as our backdrop. Check back throughout the week for more updates.

The Smithfield bridge near Station Square was our next location. I love how the girly fashions contrast with the bridge's steel structure. The flowy bow-tie blouse I am wearing also plays well against the rugged features of these chestnut suede boots and jeans. The combination of tan and turquoise reminds of the American west. I am glad the girls at Pavement talked me out of my comfort zone with this blouse because I was very pleased with the results. Something that will work many different ways is always a great addition to one's closet.

Speaking of American West how amazing are these faux-fur boots? You could definitely do some hiking through a forest in these and not worry about your feet being cold. I love the mixing of brown and black hues and textures. These boots call for an outfit on the more subtle side, but still require a small dose of fashion-forward. This loose knit sweater with its sheer quality and interesting cut provide that. Don't be fooled by the sheerness of it. This sweater is extremely warm and soft.

Crocs and Pavement Day 1

I could not be more excited to share with you my most recent collaboration with Crocs. Their boots for the fall and winter seasons have impressed me once again because of their ability to stay true to their comfortable roots while still offering fashion-forward styles. The boots come in gorgeous, rich fall colors and luxe materials. I think I could fall asleep wearing their suede boots they are so comfortable.

To offer some complete fall looks, we teamed up with Pavement a local boutique in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh. I am in love with every outfit we shot.

Joining me this time is Sarrah Beyer of Esbi International Salon & Spa who did an amazing job with not only our hair and makeup but modeling too. I have never felt more glamorous and confident.

We knew we wanted to do part of the shoot on Mt. Washington. It has the best view of Pittsburgh. The city turned out to be a great backdrop for these all American looks. Sometimes jeans and a t-shirt is all you need. Add this patchwork shawl made out of recycled materials and these brown suede boots and you get the right amount of texture and subtle hues for a more laid-back but put-together look.

It doesn’t get more American than fringe and a motor cycle jacket. For an updated twist, try this classic jacket in a softer material. The braided fringe scarf adds another element and a subtle pop to this all black ensemble. A nice pair of tall suede black boots do all the talkin’.

Falling for bright skirts

This skirt was definitely made for spring with its brights bursts of color and impressionist floral pattern. I usually pair it with a crisp white blouse and bright baubles, and I feel all special like I'm going to walk into a store on Rodeo Drive and say, "Big Mistake! Huge!", like my idol Julia Roberts. But that's easy. The real challenge, and the thing that coincidentally makes the skirt look even brighter, is when you pair it with fall's darker hues. For some reason, I had a feeling about this Army Green button down. Green compliments flowers. It's science. Black tights would have been too severe with the bright colors and gray tights would have clashed with the shoes so I went with maroon. Overall I thought the colors meshed well. Have you tried wearing any brighter colors for fall?

The Paris Wife

Have you read any good books lately? I recently read The Paris Wife, by Paula McClain, the story of Hemingway's time in 1920s Paris told through his first wife Hadley's perspective. It helps you imagine the romance of being in love in Paris and a writer. Using A Moveable Feast as a guide, McClain retells conversations recorded by Hemingway between himself and Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ezra Pound. I first heard about the book through my Alma Mater, where McClain was an adjunct creative writing instructor. At the beach this past summer I read A Moveable Feast for context. McClain's novel shows the glitz and glam of the roaring 20s but also the disappointment and frustration Hadley often feels. It's a lovely story. Would you read it?

New Trader Joe's in Pittsburgh

I usually hate grocery shopping. The store is crowded and the lines always feel too long. Not to mention, I can’t stand being inside when it’s a nice day outside. I immediately changed my tune when I found out a Trader Joe’s was opening in my neck of the woods this past weekend. Something about the cheery atmosphere of the store doesn’t make it feel like a chore to go shopping. Although it is oftentimes referred to as the cheaper version of Whole Foods, I feel like Trader Joe’s does a nice job of stocking ingredients for the trendy and healthy recipes I read about on blogs and in magazines, i.e. kale. As I was walking through the store I noticed so many fresh precut and easy to prepare ingredients.

The only downside I could see is that we are sans 2 Buck Chuck here in Pittsburgh because of some crazy Pennsylvania laws regarding the sale of alcohol. Sad face. Also some things still are more expensive so I will continue to rely on other grocery stores, but I am extremely impressed with Trader Joe’s ability to bring specialty food to the masses in a fun and accessible way. Where do you go grocery shopping? Is there a specialty store that you prefer? Here are some pics of my Trader Joe’s haul:

Halloween decorations: Your first place

I used to love decorating for Halloween. When I was younger, that involved plastering some pretty old-school paper decorations to our front window. I actually wish I had some of those decorations with me at my new place. But the beauty of having your first place is that you get to start accumulating your own collection of holiday decorations. Not wanting to break the bank on my first holiday, I started out small. I think I was able to restrain myself well, but I will still have a good base to start with for next year. Here is my little guide to Decorating Your First Place for Halloween.

1. Mini-Pumpkins: I bought mini pumpkins and spread them around my book case.

2. Cobwebs: This is an easy and cheap way to add a little mystique to your Halloween decor. Yes. I have all of the Harry Potter books.

3. Unique finds: I found this Boo sign at an apple farm that also sells home goods. I love how the cursive writing and stripes makes it look like just another piece of the decor, but when you look closer it has cute Halloween message.

4. Lights: Strands of Halloween lights or a light-up pumpkin like this one will instantly make you think of Halloween. Candles would be fun too.

5. Door wreath: This wreath looks like it could have been made from branches and leaves from my backyard, which are some of my favorite natural decorations.

6. Pumpkin and Mums: You can't decorate for Halloween without a pumpkin on your porch. And nothing looks classier than a set of Mums on your front porch.

Black Magic

I recently saw some bloggers in a campaign for Gap's black pants. I replaced my black pants with a pair from the Gap when they were having a 50% off sale over the summer. I have been wearing Gap's pants since high school when I got a pair that had a zipper in the back and no pockets—so sexy! So for round 2 I wanted to make sure I bought a pair that I would really love. In the dressing room I must have tried on every style—curvy, straight, flare, and bootcut. I also tried on a couple of different sizes in these various styles. Let's just say I was in there for a while. I left the store satisfied with my bootcut black pants. I like the silhouette this style creates the most and this was also the style that fit my body the best. A good pair of black pants can be worn with practically anything and is a must have in any closet.

Scary Movie Beauties

I must make an amendment to this post. I just saw Rosemary's Baby for the first time, and I know this may be going against the grain, but I love her bob so much more than her pixie cut. I realize that she is supposed to look more sickly as the movie goes on so that may be skewing my perspective, but she does look much cuter in the beginning of the movie. And all of her outfits are amazing, especially that plaid skirt and navy blue sweater.

Around this time of year I always have to get my fix of scary movie classics. You know the type. Movies that at one time were really scary, but now have become outdated in their special effects, but still pack a punch when it comes to time period clothing and phrases. These are scary movies that are definitely my speed.

While watching the Haunting circa 1963, I couldn't help but get distracted by the fashions of one of the lead characters. The psychic and "modern woman", Theo, played by Claire Bloom, wore chic black turtlenecks and skinny pants, and sweater dresses and pendants; styles that have made a come back recently.

While seeing a showing of The Birds at a local theater, also from 1963, wealthy socialite Melanie Daniels played by Tippi Hedren impressed me with her style. Her bright pink lips, green eyeshadow and up dos went well with her bright green skirt suit. I also love this classic black ensemble from the beginning of the movie. There must be something about 1963 style that really has me infatuated. If you are looking for an understated and classic Halloween costume this year, I would recommend dressing up like one of these ladies.

California Dreamin...

Mad Men is one of my favorite references for style. Unlike most people, however, my sartorial appetite isn't satisfied by Betty or even Joan. It's Don's casual acquaintances that really tickle my fancy. Remember Midge (season 1) with her cigarette pants and peasant tops? And who could forget Joy from season 2 when Don goes to California? I immediately though of Joy's iconic 60s California resort wear when I saw this dress at a local consignment shop. The only problem was this dress was just a smidgen small. I consulted my tailor and for $12 I was able to turn this thrifted Loft number into the perfect outfit for a wedding in Raleigh this past weekend.

Updated rugby stripe sweater

It doesn't get much preppier than a rugby stripe, which is, of course, why I love it. I purchased this Gap sweater at one of their Christmas sales for $15. For the price, it actually is quite a thick sweater and the tan and orange stripes give the sweater an updated look. I of course went for the classic route pairing it with a black skirt, white button down and loafers. There is something about this sweater that makes these worn out classics look cool.

It's tights weather! When did that happen? It was just skirt weather. I get mildly if not just as excited about tights weather as I do about skirt weather, but only for a second, because then I remember how uncomfortable tights are. This outfit consists of one of my most dressy work pieces and one of my most casual pieces and somehow it just works. I don't know if it's because this neutral dress can handle anything I throw at it or because this gingham shirt brightens anything it is paired with. It may be a combination of both, but I was quite happy with this nerdy librarian look I have going on.

This outfit makes me think of Kate Middleton or Emma Watson via Burberry. It has that traditional British look that still says I am a modern woman. Plaid is a pattern I always get nostalgic for when fall rolls around. It seems to be the perfect compliment to heavier fabrics. I got this skirt at a vintage shop in Cleveland last spring called the Rag Refinery. Lucky for all of you they have an online shop as well. I love how the skirt adds the perfect touch of vintage to the outfit, and that it goes perfectly with these boots. Do you plan to incorporate plaid into your fall wardrobe?

Fall dress from work to date

I think this picture perfectly encapsulates the fit of this dress. It lays in a similar way as a wrap dress, but without the wrap, and the deep neckline is paired with a waist line similar to a skater dress. I wore this first as work outfit with my scarf covering the deep v-neck and then out to dinner and a movie at South Side Works. I kept it comfortable with the flats and the scarf doubled as a way to keep it conservative at work while also dressing it up for a date after work. I have a couple more looks in mind for this dress so stay tuned and read my review of the dress.

Reworking my vintage electric blue blouse

I first wore this blouse on the blog about a year ago with these black pants and heels. Today I am revisiting it with some updated accessorizing in the form of a statement necklace, red lipstick, and leopard print heels. This blouse was purchased at ridiculously affordable thrift store prices and I am still getting use out of it a year later. Expensive designers are still putting out similar styles. Regardless, how can you say no to electric blue?

70s style dress and boots

A little sneak peak into my weekend at Trax Farm in Finleyville, PA. I have finally found my country market near the city. As you can see fall harvest is in full swing.

I have worn my mom's old dress countless times. Every time I get a plethora of compliments. There may not be a better time than right now to wear it. With fall right around the corner I can give it that sophisticated look with boots and a blazer. The flowy skirt paired with the boots evokes that 70s style everyone is talking about. This is the first time I have styled this dress for a fall work look and I love everything about pairing the structured with the less structured.

I wore this outfit tonight to a Mason Jennings concert at Mr. Smalls Theater in Millvale, PA. I was extremely impressed by this concert venue. We watched a movie projected onto the back of a brick building in their outdoor courtyard and enjoyed pumpkin beers while we waited for the opener Pine Tree. The small old 18th century Catholic church provided for an intimate atmosphere, which was especially appropriate for Mason Jennings whose encore was a Hawaiian lullaby his mother used to sing to him.

$14.95 H&M jersey wrap dress

I went into my local H&M looking for this dress after I was prompted by an email from the retailer advertising this dress for the amazing price of $14.95. To me it looked like an up-to-date take on the jersey dress that could be worn for just about any occasion from work to family events to a night out.

One thing you should know, if you are looking for this particular color pictured above, is that it is actually more of an orange rust than red. I was not upset by this as I like the color rust, but it's important to note that the color looks different in person. The dress also comes in a blue pattern, snakeskin, powdery beige, camel, and black.

When I first tried on the dress in my typical size small, it was not flattering at all. The waist was loose making me look wider than I actually am and it just didn't have that sleek look like from the picture. I guessed that H&M's inconsistent sizing was the culprit. Indeed it was. Upon trying on the x-small, the waist was tighter and hitting me in the right place. The sleeves were also much tighter, but I don't mind that. The wrap, which was a little too loose before, was also fitting much better now.

I bought the dress in rust and can see myself wearing it in a variety of different ways such as with boots and a scarf or black tights and heels.

Being that this dress is jersey and only $14.95 the fit is not going to be perfect on everyone, but I definitely advise you to try on some other sizes and see how it looks before giving up on it. It really is quite a versatile and stylish dress for only $14.95.

Old Navy Green Corduroys

I was walking into Old Navy to make a return last spring when these green corduroy pants jumped off the sale rack and into my bag for $6! It didn't make sense to not buy them. Ever since then I couldn't wait to wear them with rich fall colors. At first I thought this red plaid button down would be way too staged and too much like a Tommy Hilfiger photo shoot, but I think the blue blazer does a good job of toning it down. Today the high was fifty nine degrees. We are officially crossing over into some cooler fall weather.

In other news, I tried the Market District Giant Eagle brand of Harvest Pumpkin pasta sauce. I made it with regular spaghetti noodles, added bacon, walnuts, and goat cheese. It was delicious. Next time I think I will make it with cheese ravioli as the recipe of the jar recommends. I love fall!

Androgynous fall look

When it comes to my work outfits I don't mind a little androgyny. I actually prefer it. A nice pair of trousers and a classic button down look great on a man, and even better on a woman. It's the Annie Hall effect. The less form fitting pieces leave more to the imagination. I threw in the boat shoes to top off the menswear-inspired look. They also seemed like a good match for these rolled navy pants. These pants are perfect for fall, and I am going to take full advantage of them while I can.

For in between seasons, this outfit has it all. Long sleeves that can be rolled up and plenty of ventilation. The color scheme also has a hint of fall with the red skirt, but still calls on summer with this chunky gold and turquoise necklace. Although it's a little glared out by the sun in these pictures, I love how this necklace spruces up a white button down shirt. I have meaning to make this pairing for a while.

Fashion's Night Out: Saks Fifth Avenue Pittsburgh

During a rainy Fashion's Night Out, the Saks Fifth Avenue in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh stood out like a beacon of everything stylish and fabulous. Whether you are a frequent shopper at Saks or you dream of shopping there one day, it's a great place to visit for some fall inspiration and fashion camaraderie.

The theme of the night was technology. Blogging and social media were embraced with a VIP area as well as some visitors from the Carnegie Science Center. Stylelist.com was in attendance taking before and after pictures of guests in their Saks styled outfits for a chance to win a $500 gift card. Overall it was all very blogger friendly.

Guests enjoy dry ice cream in front of the Theory display.

Local DJs and music were on every floor as well as some kind of treat in the form of candy, cupcakes, wine, and more.

For me, looking at all of the on trend displays for fall was the biggest highlight. I can't wait to pull out my chunky sweaters for cooler weather and the gorgeous sweaters on display definitely stole the show. There were various boho/70s looks, something I will truly be embracing this fall with wide leg pants and flowy tops. Although dark rich colors were prominent, it looks as though you shouldn't rule out brights just yet. See the hats and glove display below. It was one of my favorites.

Models Marissa and Maddie look great in their fall styles. I loved the updated Burberry print on this dress.

While there I was able to take a tour of the store with Marketing Director Meg Flynn, and I was given the chance to see just how specialized the shopping experience at Saks really is. Regular shoppers can try on clothes in their own private dressing room and seek the help of a stylist by joining the Fifth Avenue Club. Perfume launches happen at Saks far in advance of other stores, such as Maison Martin Margiela's (untitled), a light flowery scent. Designers rent space to showcase their wears. It's truly like having access to New York City's Fifth Avenue.

I have officially started wearing fall clothes. The temperature in Pittsburgh has been ranging from 60 to 70 with pailfuls of rain and blustery wind making me reach for long sleeve shirts and longer pants. I love the rich silky fabric and color of this blouse for fall. Tie blouses just happen to be all the rage right now too. Look at me go! For some reason I decided to take this look in a 60s direction with the tight black pants and Mrs. Robinson-esque leopard print heels. I couldn't resist the great pattern mixing opportunity here. Happy Labor Day! Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall and everything that comes with it; including pumpkin spice lattes, turtlenecks, and football! Like I said before, I am not one to follow the rules about wearing white. You may see me attempting to wear this skirt with gray wool tights when it gets a little cooler. But I couldn't help breaking out this skirt one more time with some true nautical flair. I love how this Ralph Lauren button up makes this frilly white skirt a little more mature. White pants

These white pants have been with me since my college days. They were purchased from Kohl's as a cheap alternative to a dress or skirt for bar hopping. I didn't end up wearing them as much as I intended and they somehow survived those days. Now they freshen up a summer work look. Instead of pairing them with the obvious nautical colors, I wore them with this black top and belted a nautical scarf over it for an interseting layer. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

New Feist Album!

Feist's new album Metals is coming out Oct. 4. To prepare, NPR posted the first single, "How Come You Never Go There". It is definitely slower than the usual upbeat tunes that became popular off of The Reminder, but I can't help but like it's more serious and sultry tone. I can't wait to hear the rest of the new album. Until then I will be famished for Feist.

Wearing white: Colorblocking

Normally when I wear white my outfits tend to lean towards the more nautical and preppy to stop myself from looking too Miami Vice. However, this time I embraced a bright 80s color combo. White is a neutral that will still stand out when paired with colorblocking. I wore this outfit to work and it reminded me of a don't that Michael Kors once said in a magazine. Don't to wear more than one bright color to work. Clearly he has never met Don Johnson...or me. For the rest of the week I will be wearing my summer whites to properly salute to a beatiful summer. A shiny new job!

New job, new clothes is what I say! Now if only I had a way to fund that theory. I do, however, have someone in my life who I can hand this J.Crew Outlet skirt to and demand that they buy it for my birthday. So much for being self sufficient. But it was a steal, so groveling was so worth it! I saw this skirt earlier this year at J.Crew and knew I would never be able to afford so I just forgot about it. When I spotted it on clearance at the J.Crew outlet, I couldn't believe it. Maybe there is something to shopping the outlets. I have found that J.Crew is one of the best outlet stores because they actually carry clothing from recent seasons.

I know posting has been sparse lately, but I promise I have had a good reason. For the majority of the summer I have been able to prevent myself from letting the cat of out the bag, but I think now is the right time to let you know. I wanted to break it to you gently. The same way you would tell your spouse that you maxed out all of your credit cards on shoes. I moved. I moved to Pittsburgh earlier this summer for a new job. I wanted to tell you so many times, but things got so hectic finding a new place, moving into said new place, adjusting to my surroundings, getting lost, my new internet service not working...and somehow fitting a vacation in there...it's all very chaotic. But now I am finally starting to feel settled.

What is to become of the Cosmpolitan Clevelander, you ask? Nothing. I am still a Clevelander at heart. You can take the girl out of Cleveland but you can't get that weird fish smell out of the girl's clothes. (Lake Erie joke?)

Anyways, things are going to be the same around here, although the local posts may be different. And I will of course be visiting Cleveland from time to time, so you still may see that city on the shores of Lake Erie.

And please no football jokes.

Touring the historical homes in Charleston is always a highlight of the trip every year. The Nathaniel Russell House is extremely impressive with its free-flying staircase. To tour the grand old southern houses, I feel like you have to do it in grand style or at least something close. A flowy dress like this one from Forever 21 is perfect because the old houses don’t always have the most modern air conditioning (if at all). Many do, however, have porches built onto the side of the house instead of the front to best take advantage of the cool air provided by the wind. Sitting on the big porch of an old southern home, sweet tea in hand is where I most want to be.

I probably created this outfit more from my obsession with this scarf than from the dress itself or anything else. To venture outside of Charleston for the moment, my friend just recently traveled to Spain where she got me this gorgeous scarf. It is the only scarf I would dare wearing in the Southern heat because it is so light weight. When thinking of what to wear with it, I immediately pictured this dark navy blue dress. For beauty, I have been obsessed with Viva la Juicy. As far as nail polish goes, a coral orange is perfect for Charleston, and Essie’s Braziliant is one of my favorite variations of this summery color. I couldn’t think of anything better to compliment the shrimp and grits I will most likely be ordering.

A striped shirt at the beach is a must. At this point, a striped shirt is a must everywhere; however, at the beach it just looks right. I picked up these pastel shorts at the J.Crew Outlet recently knowing they would look good with summer brights and patterns but could also add that extra panache to a plain white shirt. Whether the temps are heating up or you were just dealt the Jack, Ace, Two, you will be glad you brought a pair of shorts with you when in Charleston.

As a very fair-skinned lady, it is my M.O. when in Charleston to hide from the sun. Therefore, when I am getting extremely absorbed in a good book while sitting on the beach I take care to have a hat on so as not to burn the very tops of my ears and scalp (it will happen if I’m not careful). And just in case I do burn my shoulders (it happens every year), it is essential to have some long-sleeve cover-ups. This one is perfect because it is a light-weight chambray that covers the right places.

When I fly I like to dress up. Who’s surprised? I’m just not the airport sweatpants kind of gal. It’s not about the age-old argument, “People used to dress up when flying”. It’s just that it’s quite easy to look good and still be comfortable. I am much more comfortable in a dress than jeans or pants. The white blazer not only adds a nice summer touch and compliments the gold jewelry, but it will also manage any climate control issues once on board. A big bag that holds more is just logical when flying. The flip flops slip on and off easily through security. And a good book is a must. I will be finishing Freedom by Jonathan Franzen before starting my beach reading list. Once I arrive, this outfit is appropriate for any occasion whether that is walking the battery or eating lunch at Magnolias. What do you wear when you fly?

Having tried on Michele Lee’s jewelry for the Crocs photo shoot, I can honestly say how impressed I am with her designs. She mixes new and vintage materials to create great show-stopping statement pieces as well as some more subtle, delicate pieces. This outfit can transition from a day date at the Art Museum to cocktails. From head to toe, I was able to compliment all of the colors of the blouse without overshadowing any particular piece. The light hue of the purple Crocs against the army green of the pants mimics the purple and green of the blouse. The purple wrap bracelets just add another interesting element and texture.

I immediately loved the vibrant red of this top. At first I thought of pairing it with jeans, but that seemed a little too expected. Pairing it with this maxi skirt really added the drama it begs for. The turquoise necklace was a natural choice to contrast the red. And because there were no crazy patterns elsewhere, I thought this would be a good opportunity to break out the leopard print Crocs. Although together the red and leopard print may seem cougar-esque, the black skirt safely separates them.

Crocs and the Night Out Dress

This is exactly the kind of bright print dress that I love to wear during the summer. It has that flowy bohemian look that is perfect for drinks on an outdoor patio. The dangly antique crystal necklace looks perfect with the higher neckline and catches the different colors like a magnifying glass. To keep it dressy, I chose an open toe in a solid color. I went with purple to keep it fun and compliment the different colors of the dress.

This dress was a favorite of everyone working on the shoot. I don’t think Kristine wanted to take it off. It’s sexy but not overly so and creates different silhouettes as the dress moves with you. The flowy pattern and bright colors add to the movement. No matter how old you are you want something that you can twirl in. I chose the bright blue Crocs for this one to play off the hints of blue in the dress. Dangly earrings were in order for a dress like this so as not to disrupt the neckline. A light bracelet with green and blue beads compliments the colors without overwhelming the outfit.

Crocs and the Everyday Summer Dress

Everyone needs a couple of dresses for summer that can be dressed down or dressed up depending on the occasion. This particular dress has such interesting layering in the front that it can totally pass for something dressier. The navy color is classic and goes with anything. However, the light fabric keeps it casual enough for a little impromptu picnic on the beach. In fact there is a little bit of sheerness to it. The bright Crocs really pop against it, as do the blue and gold of the necklace.

I love this look because it is the perfect example of how the translucent material of the Crocs can achieve a more subdued hue if paired with the right thing. This dress has some hidden pink tones that go well with the tangerine Crocs and orange necklace. Having tried on this dress, part of the Figwood collection, Banyan Tree’s in house line, I can vouch for the fact that it is extremely flattering and comfortable. It would be great to wear to a summer barbecue.

Crocs Translucent Collection

When Crocs first became a wardrobe staple in most households, I was not one of the hoards to go out and buy a pair. People would brag about how comfortable they were, but I was still more concerned with style than comfort. I have always loved dressing up, and my footwear needs have followed suit. So when I found out that Crocs was making fashionable shoes with their signature comfort-inducing materials, I was excited to try them out.

I first had the opportunity to see the Crocs Translucents line strutting down the runways at Fashion Week Cleveland. The collection complimented even the more fashion-forward looks.

When I was given the chance to style these shoes myself with clothes from Cleveland boutique, Banyan Tree, I was sold. The Crocs Translucents line paired well with even some of the dressier pieces I chose, which was the true test for me.

I will be posting the different looks I styled throughout the week. I hope you can draw some inspiration for your summer wardrobe.

Risky Business

The wayfarers and collar shirt make me think of Tom Cruise in Risky Business minus the whole dancing in my underwear part. For me, it's more like blogging in my underwear in between drying my hair, getting dressed, and running out the door in the morning. Yeah—that's really not cool. Even though I may not have the coolness factor of Tom Cruise in an 80s movie, I sure feel cool in this summery red and blue combo. The nude heels and brown belt add to the warmth of the outfit. Lastly, I couldn't allow this preppy outfit to be too perfect, so I added some vintage bracelets. Risky...right?

Beachside town

With all of the nautical-inspired fashion right now, I am surprised to not see a resurgence in this style of skirt. I used Google to search key words such as nautical-print skirt, beach-print skirt, and even, French Riviera print skirt. Nothing came up like this. If I had to guess, I would say stores like Talbots and Ann Taylor used to carry skirts like this one in the 90s. It's certainly for a more "mature" woman. Even still, I am obsessed with this style skirt. I can't help but love the depiction of a beachside town in heavy paint-like strokes. And even better, I picked this one up at the thrift store for $3.50. The tag on this skirt reads Bernardo, a brand I never heard of until I Googled it.

Navigating casual Friday

For casual Friday at work (everyday), I like to turn to my Forever 21 maxi dress. It is amazingly comfortable, and it is also a great option for any Friday night plans that may come up. Wearing it with a cardi or cover up, to me, makes it work appropriate. Some may disagree, but my office is pretty casual. Some people wear jeans everyday. I choose to dress up during the week, but opt for something casual Friday, which is what the majority of people do. Everyone associates casual Friday with jeans. However, during the recent heat wave (99 degrees) we have been experiencing, jeans might not be the most comfortable option. So I am just curious, what can you get away with at your office? Is it just me, or are policies becoming more relaxed?
